Sonobe, a collaborative installation by origami/designer and print-based artist Eric Mathew presents the viewer with a constellation of hand folded spherical origami works, or Sonobe. The Sonobe are made of Fabriano Tiziano paper and are adorned with screenprinted patterns inspired by graphic elements used in banknotes from Canada, Malaysia, Finland and the United States of America. These currencies related to the our respective nationalities and ethnic backgrounds.
Currency can be seen to function as a rhizomatic form; passing from hand to hand it is a form of viral communication and reproduction. In this context currency can be seen to take on a life of its own; functioning with its own sense of purpose and agency globally. In this sense, the resulting constellation evokes such things as micro-organisms, molecules and DNA. |
